Trouble & Turmoil, Inpuwer's Egypt : Hieroglyph reading class

8 x Tuesday Evenings 14th November - 12th December, Christmas break, then we resume 9th-23rd January
Times: 7.30-9pm (UK Times) to join live.

We love to see you for the live lectures, but if you have to miss one, don't worry, you can of course catch up (or watch again) at your leisure via the recordings. You will have access to the recorded lectures for a whole month after the last live lecture. Recordings will be available until 23rd February.

During this 8-week reading class we will read extracts from The Admonitions of Ipuwer, a lamentation text known from a single 19th dynasty manuscript,  now in the Rijksmuseum Van Oudheden, Leiden.  The text itself was likely composed during the Middle Kingdom. This enigmatic composition speaks of social upheaval, chaos, starvation and crime, and is addressed to an unnamed king or deity called ‘The Lord of All’. The description of a world turned upside down may refer to particular historical events of the First Intermediate Period, but the notion of human suffering is universal.

We will be reading a hieroglyphic transcription of the hieratic text; students will also be offered an adapted version, with signs omitted by the ancient scribe added for learning purposes. Students will also receive homework exercises and access to grammar resources for self-study between sessions. The homework is provided in two levels, so that students can choose the easier or more difficult version to match their own level of challenge.  All sessions are recorded so there is the option to use these to revise content between sessions.

Our hieroglyphs reading classes are a friendly and supportive way to build confidence with your reading. The course is suitable for students who understand how hieroglyphs work and can recognise a few words and phrases that would like to develop their reading skills further,  as well as more experienced readers who would like to deepen their knowledge, vocabulary and grammatical understanding by reading more widely.

The live sessions are interactive and students can ask Maiken questions that arise as we go along. If you find it easier to watch via the recorded sessions, questions can be sent in to be answered the following week.

Join us for 8 weeks as we take a look into Inpuwer’s topsy-turvy world where life is not as it should be. This text gives us a real insight into human fears at a time of chaos, and provides valuable clues to what life was like for both rich and poor in ancient Egypt.
