As Howard Carter, discoverer of the tomb of Tutankhamun, wrote, the very name ‘Valley of the Kings’ is full of romance. Over a period of some four centuries, almost every king of Egypt cut their tomb in this barren wadi on the west bank opposite Luxor, accompanied by some of the cream of Egyptian society – and a few of their pets. Some of the royal tombs are masterpieces of architectural and artistic skill, and were once filled with rich and exquisite funerary equipment, including coffins of solid gold. Yet the inevitable tomb robber divested almost all of them of their riches, and time, floods and man reduced many of the tombs to shadows of their former selves. Over these five evenings we will be tracing the history of the royal valley from its origins to the present day, also considering the great memorial temples that formed an integral part of the provisions made for the posthumous existence of an ancient Egyptian king of the New Kingdom.

Professor Aidan Dodson is author to numerous Egyptology  books and articles including The Royal Tombs of Ancient Egypt (Pen & Sword, 2016). Join Aidan  for a set of 5 lectures exploring this majestic royal necropolis:
