The Temples of Thebes
5x Monday Evenings 13th February - 13th March 2023
Times: 7.30-9pm (UK Times) to join live. Also available to watch again via recordings at a time to suit you.
Over these five evenings, we will be exploring the temples that lie in the great open-air museum that is ancient Thebes, modern Luxor. We will begin by looking at the landscape in which they were built, how it changed over time, how this impacted their development, and purposes for which particular types of sanctuary were constructed. Then, we will take a tour of these monuments, beginning at the stupendous complex of Karnak, and continuing with the temple of Luxor, before crossing the Nile to investigate the temples on the west bank. The latter are mainly the memorial temples of the pharaohs of the New Kingdom, but there are exceptions, most particularly the so-called ‘small temple’ at Medinet Habu.
