Poetical Stela of Thutmose III with Dr Maiken Mosleth King
8 Tuesday evening lectures 7-9pm (UK times) or catch up with recordings. 1st Sept - 27th October (no class on 29th September)
Do you have a basic understanding of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs and want to build on your existing knowledge? Join us this autumn as we read the poetical speech by the sun god Amun-Ra to Thutmose III, an 18th dynasty Pharaoh famous for his military exploits in the Levant and Sudan. This speech was inscribed on a stela erected in the Karnak temple complex dedicated to Amun and his divine family, and recounts the military victories bestowed upon Thutmose by the deity.
This stela, now in The Grand Egyptian Museum Cairo (GEM 58/76), illustrates the close relationship between the king and Amun-Re. These are the words of Amun-Re carved in stone. He calls Thutmose his son and his avenger and it documents the victories Amun-Re has helped Thutmose achieve, playing with language and repetition to create a poem of victories, ‘I came to let you tread…!’ If we have time, we hope to compare and contrast this with extracts from other divine speeches from this period.
You will have the opportunity to consolidate and revise the grammar of Middle Egyptian, as well as learning new vocabulary. The sessions will consist of guided reading of the text, and discussing its wider meaning. All relevant study materials will be provided in advance of the sessions, and the sessions will be recorded, so you can join us live or catch up at a time convienent for you. Recordings will be avaliable until 27th November.
