Jacques de Morgan (1857–1924) was a French mining engineer, geologist, and archaeologist who might be easily called one of the luckiest Egyptologists of all times discovering numerous royal burials containing unique and beautiful finds. His excavations and interpretation of sites would considerably forward our understanding of ancient Egypt for years to come.
In 1894, he uncovered a massive collection of Middle Kingdom jewellery belonging to five royal princesses of the 12th and 13th Dynasty, on top of that he found the almost intact tomb of the 13th Dynasty king Hor. Further important work included the clearance of the Kom Ombo temple and the discovery of the mastaba of Mereruka. Perhaps his most important contribution to our understanding of ancient Egypt came from his work at Naqada where he discovered a huge First Dynasty tomb and his interpretation and study of this period ensures that he should be remembered for playing an outstanding role in the study of Egyptian Prehistory.
Despite an impressive array of discoveries and the significant advancement of our understanding de Morgan remains an often undervalued and overlooked Egyptologist. This course aims to right that wrong!
This set of 4 lectures will present de Morgan’s work in Egypt and a detailed discussion on some of his most important discoveries.
Dr Wolfram Grajetzki
Wolfram Grajetzki is a Honorary Senior Research Fellow at University College London. He studied Egyptology, Prehistory and Classical archaeology in Berlin with his PhD on the highest state officials in the Middle Kingdom (1998). He worked on several projects, including excavations in Egypt and Pakistan and was teaching Egyptology in Berlin, London and Pisa, He published several scholarly and popular articles and books on burial customs and the Middle Kingdom. In 2025 he was the guest lecturer on the Kemet Klub Middle Kingdom tour.
