The Battle of Kadesh
Hieroglyph Reading Class with Dr Maiken Mosleth King

 8 weeks: 19th August - 7th October

Times: 7.30-9pm* (UK Times) Tuesday evenings to join live.

We love to see you for the live lectures, but if you have to miss one, don't worry, you can of course catch up (or watch again) at your leisure via the recordings. You will have access to the recorded lectures for a whole month after the last live lecture. Recordings will be available until 7th November.

Do you have a basic understanding of Middle Egyptian grammar and Egyptian hieroglyphs? Do you wish to increase your proficiency and ability to read Middle Egyptian texts? If so, this reading course is for you.

Ramesses II is one of the most famous Pharaohs of ancient Egypt, known for his unusually long reign of almost 70 years and his extensive military campaigns in the Levant. Among the most significant of these campaigns is the Battle of Kadesh, in which Ramesses fought against the Hittite king Muwatalli II. The fight was recorded in two forms, the bulletin and the poem and together they give an account of Egyptian victory, which was in reality a stalemate, and ultimately resulted in the first known peace treaty.

Join us for this reading course as together we will read the Kadesh Poem and learn how Ramesses wanted to portray the events of this battle in year 5 of his reign. An interesting insight into ancient warfare and tactics with spies, traps, torture and ambush!

Homework will be set in two levels of difficulty so that you can choose the level of challenge to best suit you.  As we go along, we will discuss grammar and the cultural meanings of the text and there will be plenty of opportunities to ask questions if needed. Students will receive access to grammar and vocabulary resources for self-study between sessions. All sessions are recorded, so that you can use the recordings to revisit class discussions or catch up if you have to miss a session.

*Please note that the  session on 9th September will start slightly later, the live lecture will start at 7.45 to enable students who are also ESB members to attend the ESB meeting
