2pm UK time.

We love to see you for the live lectures, but if you have to miss one, don't worry, you can of course catch up (or watch again) at your leisure via the recordings. More than four-thousands years ago, an Egyptian nobleman named Harkhuf was laid to rest in a tomb at Qubbet el-Hawa.

He had led an unusual life: He was a political and religious leader, but also an explorer. He had traversed thousands of miles, leading trade expeditions from Egypt far into southern Sudan. And Harkhuf did not want to be forgotten; he left a long inscription of his deeds carved around the entrance of his tomb. This course aims to re-create Egypt’s Pyramid Age through Harkhuf’s eyes. It follows him during his youth in the city of Elephantine, using archaeological and textual evidence to reconstruct the city and its inhabitants. And it journeys with him into unknown lands, taking us along for the ride: By boat on the placid waters of the Nile, and at the head of caravans traversing the vast Sinn el-Kaddab Plateau and the Great Sand Sea.

Lecture 1: Harkhuf’s Time and Place

Lecture 2: The First and Second Journeys

Lecture 3: The Third Journey

Lecture 4: The Final Journey and What Came Next
