Place, sky and shape are three key features of the ancient Egyptian way of embracing a landscape into their cosmology. Today we think of this as sacred landscapes, but for the ancient Egyptians it was the place the god lived, the place where one could meet the god.

This course is based on the tour Sacred Landscapes conducted by Bernadette and the Kemet Klub earlier this year.  Bernadette has expanded and rearranged the material to create this new six week course. The six weeks are arranged as follows:

Week 1 – What is a sacred landscape?

Week 2 – The Old Kingdom way of creating sacredness in tomb and in place.

Week 3 – Abydos, the rise of Osiris in the Middle Kingdom and the use of procession to enact him within a landscape.

Week 4– The landscape of Thebes, its cosmology and festivals from its origins in the pre-dynastic to the New Kingdom.

Week 5 – The New Kingdom sacredness of the sky,  Senenmut and the Ramesside astronomical ceilings.

Week 6 – The Moon and Osiris in the Late Period and the cosmological maps in the Osirian Chapels at Dendera.
