Reading Hieroglyphs: Kamose the Brave!
With Dr Penny Wilson
5 weeks: 1st - 29th Oct 2024
Times: 7.30-9pm (UK Times) Tuesday evenings to join live.
We love to see you for the live lectures, but if you have to miss one, don't worry, you can of course catch up (or watch again) at your leisure via the recordings. You will have access to the recorded lectures for a whole month after the last live lecture. Recordings will be available until 29th November.
Join us for this 5 week hieroglyph reading class where we will read the hieroglyphic text on the ‘Carnarvon’ tablet and Kamose stelae (ca. 1550-1500), originally set up in Karnak temple, with an account of how the Theban king campaigned against Apep, ruler of the city of Hut-waret in the eastern delta. The text contains accounts of the battle strategies as well as insights into Theban ideology and geographical information. The consequences of the campaign were the establishment under Ahmose of a new line of kings over the whole of Egypt and the beginnings of a new imperial dynasty. Who was Kamose and those who supported him and why did they initiate a military campaign? The text may provide some answers and more questions.
This course is suitable for students who are familiar with hieroglyphs but would like to develop their understanding of Middle Egyptian grammar and vocabulary. The text does have some challenging sections but students will be supported and Penny will provide students with study notes for the more difficult elements of grammar and vocabulary.
The classes provide a friendly and supportive environment within which you can develop confidence with your reading. Homework will be provided to encourage students to have a go at reading independently at home, and our informal classroom is the perfect place for questions or to ask for further clarification.
