Portraits or presence: Depicting Egyptians from the Predynastic to Roman Period with Dr Campbell Price
4 lectures over 2 Sunday afternoons
Sunday 23rd & 30th August2pm (UK times)
Some ancient Egyptians appear so recognisable to us today that we almost feel that we could pick them out in a crowd of living people. But were the objects on which we base our mental images ‘portraits’ in the modern sense…? By taking a close look at what we now think of as individual works of art, patterns begin to emerge and it may be possible to decode some of the meanings behind representations.
This course will chronologically examine the changing styles, fashions and intentions behind creations of the human face from Predynastic times to the Roman Period. Famous names like Djoser, Amenemhat III, Hatshepsut, and Ramesses II will all feature, in addition to the faces of lesser known (or almost totally unknown) individuals. Why do these people appear the way they do and what are these faces trying to tell us?
Sunday 23rd August

Lecture 2. Middle Kingdom to New Kingdom
Sunday 30th August
