Kemet Klub’s Sunny Silsila Summer Party!

This is a free lecture, but you do need to register.
Associate Professor Maria Nilsson & Assistant Director John Ward
Saturday 29th June

All are welcome to join us for our summer party with an informal catch up on the latest from Gebel el-Silsila

Saturday 29th June 2-3.15 UK time.

Come and join us live online for some summer sun,  a little bit of Egyptological silliness and a chance to find out the latest from Silsila direct from the site itself! There will also be a free Kemet Klub course up for grabs as a prize to be won, so sign up today (via the instructions below) and we will see you in Silsila!

Known to the ancients as Khenu or Kheny, Gebel el-Silsila is home to the ancient sandstone quarries used by pharaohs such as Akhenaten, Tutankhamun and Ramses II. Many of the most important sites and monuments in Egypt were built using Silsila sandstone.

We know a lot about the rulers of Egypt through their tombs and monuments but we know comparatively little about the everyday ancient Egyptians. Silsila gives us the chance to understand them better and to tell their story in their own words.

Throughout the quarries there is a variety of ancient graffiti including prehistoric pictographs, hieroglyphic, hieratic, demotic, Greek and Coptic inscriptions, as well as figurative representations dating from the Old Kingdom. There is older evidence too, and possibly Egypt’s largest collection of quarry marks.

Maria and John have been excavating Gebel el-Silsila every year since 2012 and in that time have made some fascinating discoveries. They are joined on site by their two young children Freja and Jonathan.

However last year that were sadly prevented from returning after John was diagnosed with lung cancer. After a gruelling regime of radiotherapy, chemotherapy and immunotherapy, Maria, John, Freja and Jonathan have returned for their long-awaited 17th season.

And it’s proved to be worth the wait.

Join them, and the rest of the Gebel el-Silsila team, live from site on Saturday 29th June as they discuss their latest season.

We will also be giving away a chance to win a free Kemet Klub course!! Given that this is our summer party, and that John has been sharing the joy of each new day at Silsila on social media with glorious photos of the sun, we thought a solar theme would be appropriate.  For a chance to be entered into the prize draw to win a free course you just need to arrive online with something  ancient Egyptian and solar, either as a photo backdrop on your zoom screen, or as a headress or costume!  Let the sun shine!

Anyone wishing to support the ongoing work of Maria, John and the team at Silsila can do so by making a donation at
