Many of us have read the Middle Egyptian classics of the Middle Kingdom, from Sinuhe to the Shipwrecked Sailor. But what about their New Kingdom counterparts? Often neglected due to their supposed ‘folkloric’ nature and more ‘prosaic’ syle, these Late Egyptian texts deserve in fact equal attention, as some of humanity’s early literary masterworks.

From narrative texts to lyrical compositions, from drammatic plot twists to hilarious pantomimes, the variety offered by New Kingdom literature in Late Egyptian is staggering, and makes for a fantastic smorgasbord of textual treats.

In this course, you will first receive essential language instruction in Late Egyptian, and will then delve into a selection of extended passages from some of the most famous literary works of the New Kingdom. Following the first class and a full immersion in Late Egyptian grammar, the other five sessions will be spent reading from the ‘Contendings of Horus and Seth’* and the ‘Tale of the Two Brothers’, but other texts too may be included, depending on the preferences and interests of the class participants.

This course will appeal not only to students with an interest in Egyptian language, texts, and literature, but also in religious and cultural topics.  All copies of the texts and reading materials will be provided in advance by the instructors. Participants are welcome to prepare the texts in advance of each session, to be then discussed and compared, under the teacher’s guidance, in the virtual classroom. It is recommended that participants should have at least one year of study practice of hieroglyphic Middle Egyptian in order to attend this course, but please feel free to contact the instructor in advance, should you have questions.

*A Note for Students who have  attended Kemet Klub’s previous course on the Contendings of Horus and Seth: This course will be looking at different sections of the text than those we covered before.
