Gods and Goddesses of Memphis and Heliopolis With Lucia Gahlin
6 weeks 4th May - 8th June
Times: 7.30-9pm (UK Times) Monday evenings to join live.
We love to see you for the live lectures, but if you have to miss one, don't worry, you can of course catch up (or watch again) at your leisure via the recordings. You will have access to the recorded lectures for a whole month after the last live lecture. Recordings will be available until 8th July.
In this course we will focus on the gods, goddesses and temple remains of Memphis, Egypt’s earliest capital, but a site where today visitors see only a small open-air museum centred on a colossal fallen statue of Ramesses II. We will explore the mythology of the deities most associated with this ancient city, founded some 5000 years ago. We will focus on the deities Ptah, Sekhmet, Nefertem, Apis and Hathor; and will supplement the limited architectural remains at Memphis with statuary, bronze figurines, carved reliefs and inscriptions, in order to better understand the religious beliefs of the inhabitants of Egypt’s first capital. We will go on to consider the solar deities worshipped at Heliopolis, of course Ra but especially the god Atum, focus of the earliest and most important of the ancient Egyptian creation myths.
Join us for this set of six lectures as together we evaluate the remaining sources to help us build a picture of the beliefs of these early Egyptians, the religious stories that were important to them and how these gods and goddesses were worshipped at these two special and very early sites.
