Tutankhamun: his life and afterlife
A set of 6 pre-recorded lectures
available for 90 days from enrolment
2022 was the centenary of one of the most spectacular archaeological finds of all time, the discovery of the tomb of Tutankhamun. A young pharaoh who had remained hidden within the Valley of the Kings for 3300 years. Quietly resting, surrounded by an impressive array of treasures, unaware that his afterlife was about to ignite a frenzy of Egyptological interest that would stretch far beyond the borders of the world that Tutankhamun himself had known.
This set of 6 lectures with Egyptologist Professor Aidan Dodson, were first recorded in 2022. Now, to mark the long awaited opening of the spectacular Tutankhamun galleries at the Grand Egyptian Museum, we are offering a second chance to enjoy this comprehensive exploration of Tutankhamun’s life and death.
Howard Carter’s discovery of the treasure trove tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922 is truly amazing but there is so much more to Tutankhamun than all these ‘Wonderful Things’… A boy-king born into the controversial Amarna period that would be known the world over thousands of years after his death.
Over these six lectures (originally delivered over three Sunday afternoons) we will be exploring the journey of being Tutankhamun – during his life, and during the millennia following his death. The first two weeks will concentrate on his reign and monuments, the third on the way his memory was expunged in the years following his death, and then his former existence pieced together over the past two centuries.
A story started at a time of religious revolution and continued by a young king in the shadow of two strong and established authority figures. A short reign and an untimely death that inadvertently, by the accident of loss and discovery, catapulted Tutankhamun into the modern world where he is probably the best known global celebrity from ancient times!
