The Egyptian sky was populated with sky deities from the time of the Pyramid Texts right through to the Roman Period. Goddesses such as Nut, Isis, Nephthys, all offered wisdom and protection, while sky gods such as Osiris, Ra and the star decans pointed to an afterlife through cosmic cycles. The divine pair of Thoth and Seshat offered knowledge, and the shifting figure of Khonsu reflected the shifting role of the moon.
In this course we will track the journey of these sky deities through Egyptian history both in text and imagery showing their shifting roles. We will look, for example, at the changing character of Isis and the mysterious Nephthys, the moving nature of Nut as she entered the New Kingdom and the emergence of Osiris and Osiris-Iah as the moon overtook Ra in dominancy in the Ptolemaic period. All these sky deities underwent transitions and in this course we trace each one through their own story, their own personal journeys.
