Depicting Deities: How Egyptian Gods Got Their Forms

Dates: 26th March & 2nd April. Live lectures 2-5pm, but also available to watch via recordings.

Ancient Egyptian art is distinctive for its depiction of divine beings as human-animal hybrids, but the representation of gods is complex and stretches back to the earliest images from Egypt. From the primeval shrouded figure to the depiction of animals on standards, from syncretized Egyptian gods to admixtures with non-Egyptian deities, the visual evidence is very rich indeed. This series of 4 lectures explores the genesis of divine forms, the need to represent gods and goddesses with certain iconography from Predynastic times to the Roman Period, and offers some tips for how to recognise certain similar-looking deities.

Join us for 4 lectures spread over 2 afternoons in the company of Dr Campbell Price and a host of ancient gods!

As usual the live sessions will have plenty of opportunity for you to ask questions as we explore this complex and intriguing subject.
